Kingaroy Eisteddfod Participants

Saint Mary's Catholic College (SMCC) is proud to announce the remarkable strides made by its Instrumental Music Program since its launch in 2024. The program has been designed to inspire a love of music among students and the wider community, and has already included many opportunities to perform in front of live audiences.

To ensure the success of the initiative, SMCC acquired a diverse range of musical instruments in 2024, enabling students to explore and develop their musical talents. Additionally, the program expanded its staff by hiring two skilled tutors, increasing the total number of tutors to five, each specialising in strings, brass, woodwind, piano, guitar and drums/ percussion.

The program has already made a significant impact through its performances, bringing joy and connection to audiences. Highlights include a heartwarming concert for the residents of Orana, showcasing the program's community spirit and dedication to sharing music beyond the classroom. Further accolades were earned during the students' participation in the Eisteddfod, where they demonstrated their growing skills and passion for music.

When asked about the students' progress, Woodwind and Brass tutor, Ms Lily Heiner, said she was proud of the musicians' dedication.

“Some of our students are brand new to playing an instrument, but have worked diligently to progress their skills," Ms Heiner said. “We were thrilled that our students were recognised at the Eisteddfod."

Strings tutor, Mrs Brie Knopke, agreed with Ms Heiner saying that the students have demonstrated a commitment beyond their years.

“It's uplifting to be part of a college whereby students can participate in The Arts," Mrs Knopke said.

“It's even more uplifting to see students as young as 8 practise their instruments every day and be committed to their craft."

In addition to receiving a range of highly commended awards at the Eisteddfod, students received awards for outstanding ensemble and individual performances including:

  • First place for Bands, Ensembles & Orchestras - Beginner Band/Ensemble P-12 (5 or more musicians, less than 18 months learning) – awarded to Saint Mary's Quartet.
  • First place for Instrumental Solos 15-18yrs Own Choice – awarded to Chloe Lowe
  • First place for Instrumental with Vocal - Secondary Students (Performance of Original Composition) – awarded to Matthew Berry

  • Second place for Bands, Ensembles & Orchestras - Beginner Band/Ensemble P-12 (5 or more musicians, less than 18 months learning) – awarded to Saint Mary's Strings

Looking ahead, SMCC students are preparing for exciting upcoming events, including a showcase at BaconFest in Kingaroy, and the anticipated Spring Recital, to be held at the College. These performances will further highlight the program's success while providing students with valuable opportunities to perform on broader platforms.

Saint Mary's Catholic College's Principal, Ms Carmel O'Brien, said she was pleased that the students were performing so well.

“Our Instrumental Music Program exemplifies the College's commitment to enriching student lives through the arts and creating transformative experiences that resonate with both performers and audiences alike," Ms O'Brien said.

“At Saint Mary's, we believe in fostering a nurturing environment whereby students can thrive academically, socially and emotionally. Such development must extend beyond the classroom and our Instrumental Music Program provides such opportunities." Mark Tomlinson with Double Bass Cello
