Students at Saint Mary's Catholic College in Kingaroy are supported to explore future career pathways through the College's Vocational Education and Training (VET) program.

For the past seven years, VET Leader Shirley Kerkow has guided students in Years 10, 11 and 12 as they engage in work experience, traineeships and career planning. By working closely with South Burnett employers and TAFE Queensland, she helps create meaningful opportunities aligned with each student's interests and goals.

Mrs Kerkow meets with students to discuss their aspirations and map out achievable pathways. Whether they are interested in health, trades, retail or other industries, she supports them to explore options and take practical steps toward their future.

All Year 10 students complete a week of work experience with a local employer and may also participate in TAFE Queensland's Career Tasters program. In Years 11 and 12, students have the option to undertake a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship, replacing a subject with one day per week of paid, hands-on industry experience.

Students are supported to balance their studies with workplace commitments and can work toward nationally recognised qualifications that contribute to their Queensland Certificate of Education.

The VET program also provides opportunities to build general employability skills, including retail and customer service experience, supporting students who may wish to work while continuing further study after school.

Mrs Kerkow is passionate about helping students understand their pathways and build confidence in their future direction. The program continues to equip students with valuable skills, experience and connections, providing a strong foundation for life beyond school.
