The College Patron - Mary Help of Christians
Mary, Help of Christians, is the patron of Australia. In 1821 Fr J.J. Therry, the first Catholic chaplain in Sydney, dedicated his first church to Mary - Sydney's St Mary's Cathedral.
In 1844, Archbishop Polding officially declared Mary, Help of Christians, as patron of Australia. The qualities encourage through this dedication are loyalty, humility, care and faith. We celebrated the College Feast Day in May, the Feast Day of Mary, Help of Christians.
The Good Samaritan Way of Life - A message for today in the Benedictine Tradition
Saint Mary's Catholic College is a school in the Good Samaritan tradition.
John Bede Polding gave to the Sisters of the Good Samaritan the Rule of St Benedict, the rule from which he himself and generations of Benedictines have drawn life.
St Benedict was born in Nursia in Italy in 480. He is remembered today because he confronted the difficulties in the society of his time and managed to live a life of peace both within himself and with all those around him.
Benedict saw God's presence in our lives as something that enables us to see situations from a brighter point of view.
The Good Samaritans have left the tradition of Benedict with our College community. We commit ourselves to serving God and neighbour. This is experienced through a readiness to be continually challenged by the gospel and to see God in all those around us.
Saint Mary's Catholic College community is called to respond with the compassion of the Good Samaritan and to create a Christian way of life where we all listen with the ear of our heart.
