Learning and Teaching

Saint Mary's Catholic College is a P-12 co-educational learning community comprised of 4 phases that cater for the learning needs of students. These phases are:

  • Early Primary (Prep – Year 2)
  • Primary (Years 3 - 6)
  • Junior Secondary (Years 7 – 10)
  • Senior Secondary (Years 11 - 12)

Our vision: To be a co-educational learning community of faith, inspiring students to realise their dignity through the values of Saint Benedict, calls us to provide a well-balanced education where learners are empowered to be positive citizens in a changing world through living our College motto of Realise your Dignity.

Our mission:  Through a Catholic faith-centred, contemporary curriculum, we provide every student with opportunities to grow spiritually, academically, culturally and physically. The College values the acquisition of a broad knowledge base and twenty-first century skills that focus on developing individuals both as independent and collaborative learners. We also value the wisdom and example of Saint Benedict who knew the importance of education, work and community. St Benedict's example has shaped our five core values of being your best, being respectful, being responsible, being just and being safe embedded in our College Mission.

Being your best by engaging, contributing and participating fully.

Being respectful to self, all people and the environment.

Being responsible by being organised, prepared and actively engaged.

Being just by welcoming difference and accepting each person and their uniqueness.

Being safe by following school rules and making good decisions.

Learning and Teaching at Saint Mary's Catholic College is underpinned by the Alice Springs (Mparntwe) Education Declaration, the Australian Curriculum (P-10), the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (11-12), the BCE Learning and Teaching Framework, the BCE Model of Pedagogy and AITSL Teachers Standards.

At Saint Mary's Catholic College, we are guided by The Alice Springs (Mparntwe) Education Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians (2019) which identifies the national vision for education and improving educational outcomes.

The declaration has two distinct but interconnected goals:

Goal 1: The Australian education system promotes excellence and equity.

Goal 2: All young Australians become:

      • confident and creative individuals
      • successful lifelong learners
      • active and informed members of the community.

Just as the Declaration is designed to provide a vision and framework for the education of all young Australians, so does learning and teaching at St Mary's Catholic College support, inspire and deliver a strong educational vision for purposeful and meaningful educational engagement for all students at our College.

Learning and Teaching at Saint Mary's Catholic College is informed by:

  • the Australian Curriculum across Prep - Year 10
  • QCAA syllabuses in Years 11 and 12
  • Vocational Education and Training courses at Level 1 or above under the Australian Qualifications Framework.

Learning and Teaching Framework

The Brisbane Catholic Education (BCE) Learning and Teaching Framework outlines the vision for the learning and growth of our students built on our values and beliefs. It is the beginning point for planning for learning and teaching across BCE.

As a Catholic Christian community, we educate all to live the gospel of Jesus Christ as successful, creative and confident, active and informed learners empowered to shape and enrich our world.

  • focus on learners and their learning
  • establish clear learning intentions and success criteria
  • activate multiple opportunities for learning and teaching
  • respond with feedback that moves learning forward
